“Colour helps to express light—not the physical phenomenon, but the only light that really exists, that in the artist's brain.” - Henri Matisse
Painting the interior of your house can be a fun and exciting project, but one of the biggest decisions you'll have to make is choosing the right colour for your walls. With so many colours to choose from, it can be overwhelming to make the right decisions.
However, selecting the perfect colour for your home is essential to create the atmosphere and ambiance you desire. In this blog post, we'll provide some tips and tricks to help you pick out the right colour(s) for your painting project.
1) Consider the Purpose of the Room
Before you start looking at colours, it's important to consider the purpose of the room. Different colours can evoke different emotions and moods. For instance, blues and greens are calming, making them great for bedrooms and bathrooms, while reds and oranges are more energizing, making them ideal for workout rooms and living rooms.
2) Think About the Lighting
The lighting in a room can drastically affect how a colour looks. If a room has a lot of natural light, it can make a colour appear lighter and brighter. Alternatively, rooms with little natural light may benefit from warmer colours that will make the space feel cozy and inviting. Another effect to note is that if a space is too dark it can feel smaller than it really is, and vice versa with the brighter colours bringing in more light making the space feel larger!
3) Do A Test Patch
Before committing to a colour, it's always a good idea to test it out. You can do this by purchasing a small sample of the paint and painting a small section of the wall. This will give you a better idea of how the colour will look in the room's lighting and with the surrounding décor.
This is a very important time to check out the undertones that show once your test patch is on the walls, natural lighting will also affect how the colour looks. (An example being the reflections off tree leaves and bushes can make your white look a bit green)
4) Consider the Colour Scheme
If you're unsure about what colour to choose, consider the existing colour scheme of the room. Think about the furniture, curtains, and accessories in the room and select a colour that will complement them. You don't want the walls to clash with the other elements in the room.
5) Don't Be Afraid to Get Creative
Choosing a colour for your walls is a personal decision, and there are no hard and fast rules. Don't be afraid to get creative and choose a colour that you love, even if it's not a traditional choice for that particular room. You can always do a feature wall, specific colours for each room, or just go with a classic two tone between the walls and trim.
Choosing the right colour for your painting project is a big decision, but, by considering the purpose of the room, the lighting, testing the colour, considering the colour scheme, and getting creative, you'll be able to make a decision that you'll love for years to come. Happy painting!
